Statement to the COP23 SBI on the UNFCCC Gender Action Plan

Statement from IUCN’s Global Senior Gender Advisor Lorena Aguilar, serving as a delegate from Costa Rica to the UNFCCC to the SBI upon the approval of the UNFCCC Gender Action Plan text:

Today we celebrate the first Gender Action Plan for the UNFCCC.

Today we are making history.

Gender issues, for us countries from the South, is not a “fashion” or being politically correct.

For us – women and men from the South – closing the gender gaps, being gender-responsive, is a matter of life and death.

We are 7.6 billion people in the world, and half of this population are women. It is unimaginable to leave this power outside the solutions for climate change.

We women are strong agents of change; this Gender Action Plan will allow us to play an active role in the biggest threat this world has ever faced.

Costa Rica on behalf of AILAC will like to thank all Parties that made this historical moment possible.
