The violence of inequality: Gender-based violence and environment linkages gathers evidence from around the world, revealing that violence is regularly used to exert or reinforce control over natural resources. These trends worsen in the context of environmental stressors and threats. The research process inspired the creation of this Center, a go-to place to gather resources, share learning, and motivate and support action. In the first-ever IUCN World Conservation Congress thematic session focused on understanding and addressing gender-based violence (GBV) in relation to environmental issues and threats such as climate change, member organizations discussed the steps they are taking to safeguard staff, partners and beneficiaries; tackle discriminatory norms that allow for or employ violence; and cooperate across sectors to better advance rights-based gender-responsive programming and results.

Security for Me and My Own: Land Demarcation and Preventing Gender-Based Violence in Uganda
In eastern Uganda, where the land is governed by a customary land tenure system, up to 80 percent of unmarried or divorced women who reported land conflicts had experienced violence when claiming their land rights. In Uganda, a RISE project aims to improve women’s land tenure and property rights, address power imbalances between men and women, and respond to GBV.
