Gendering the field: Towards sustainable livelihoods for mining communities

Compilation of academic papers that were presented at an international workshop on ʹMining, Gender and Sustainable Livelihoodsʹ in 2008. These articles highlight key issues and implications of integrating gender to foster sustainable livelihoods in both large-scale and informal, artisanal and small-scale mining across different regions. Gender-based violence (GBV) is identified in many of these articles, in connection with extractives.

Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs launch court challenge to coastal gasLink pipeline’s environmental approval

Press release from the Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs on the filling of an application for a Judicial Review of the British Columbia Environmental Assessment Office decision to extend the environmental certificate for Coastal GasLink’s proposed fracked gas pipeline for another five years. One of the reasons is the demonstrated direct link between extractive industries and an increase in violence against indigenous women.

Investigative report of misconduct at the Grand Canyon river district

Report investigating complaints from 13 former and current employees of the National Park Service at the Grand Canyon National Park’s River District in the United States over the past 15 years. Complaints included discrimination, retaliation and sexually hostile work environment and many of them were not properly investigated or reported. The investigative report confirmed a long-term pattern of sexual harassment and hostile work environment.
