At the international level, GGO has been a strong technical advocacy presence in countless multilateral spheres, ensuring existing gender equality mandates, as well as emerging gender and environment concerns, are well integrated into policymaking and championed in implementation spheres alike. GGO has been influential in such processes as the United Nations Rio Conventions , United Nations Framework Conventions on Climate Change (UNFCCC), United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), as well as Rio+10 and Rio+20.
GGO teamed up with the Secretariat of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) to develop a Gender Policy Framework (GPF) and suggestions for implementation. This GPF institutionalizes and mainstreams gender issues within the work of the Convention. The specific, multi-stakeholder targets developed in this Framework spread across four interrelated spheres: policy; organizational; constituency; and delivery. Read more about the gender mainstreaming targets of the UNCCD here.
The Gender Plan of Action for the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) includes targets and proposes instruments to address gender concerns in all areas of the CBD. It is the main reference document for all stakeholders with regards to the mainstreaming of gender into their work on the conservation of biological diversity. Similarly to the UNCCD, the Gender Plan of Action for the CBD includes targets in the policy, organizational, constituency, and delivery. Read more about these targets here.
These separate, yet interrelated international treaties require enhanced cooperation and collaboration to give full expression to their provisions. IUCN has been identified by the Secretariats of the CBD, UNCCD, and UNFCCC, as well as the Global Environment Facility (GEF), as their preferred partner in efforts to harmonize gender mainstreaming across these Conventions. IUCN works closely with these Secretariats to develop a common vision and a shared roadmap to promote the advancement of gender equality.
