The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Cancun Agreements in 2010 and Durban Outcomes in 2011 called for REDD+ national strategies and systems for providing information on how safeguards are being addressed and respected to integrate ‘gender considerations’. In 2011, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), with support from the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA), and in collaboration with the Women’s Environment and Development Organization (WEDO), facilitated participatory, multi-stakeholder workshops in Cameroon, Ghana, and Uganda to create Gender and REDD+ Roadmaps. The Roadmaps—the first of their kind—were produced during the first phase of the project for each country process and identified context-specific gender and REDD+ concerns, stakeholders, and concrete actions to integrate and enhance gender in REDD+ processes and initiatives. Currently, each Roadmap, as well as each country’s national REDD+ process, is in a different stage of implementation. Creation and facilitation of a Gender and REDD+ Task Force (GTF), or working group, is the most recent step to propel project outcomes forward and move closer to the project’s ultimate goal: to enhance gender mainstreaming and gender and climate change considerations into effective national REDD+ processes by ensuring women’s participation in the process.
EGI: Women’s Participation in Global Environmental Decision Making factsheet
Women’s voice and agency are essential for the governance of natural resources because of their diverse experiences as farmers, fishers, household providers, and entrepreneurs. However, their perspectives are often unrecognized and their needs unmet in shaping and applying environmental policy. Ensuring that gender perspectives and women’s knowledge, needs, and capacities inform sound policy making is critical to achieving sustainable livelihoods and sustainable development. A key barrier to advancing gender equality in the policy arena has been a void in information, data, and measurement of women’s participation in environmental decision-making processes. The new EGI dataset helps to fill this knowledge gap.
REDD+ initiatives pose many potential challenges while offering many potential benefits for local communities, specifically women. As such, Uganda has worked with IUCN to ensure that their REDD+ initiatives include a gender perspective and act to empower local communities while conserving essential forests. This publication reports the outcomes of workshops for multiple stakeholder including women's organizations which form the basis of this roadmap to support mainstreaming of gender in REDD+ processes in Uganda.

Gender and REDD+ Technical Workshop Summary Report
Over three days, 13-15 May 2014, in Washington, D.C., the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) joined with the Global Gender Office (GGO) of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to organize and host a technical workshop on gender and reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+). To develop a substantive and forwardlooking agenda, and to facilitate a dynamic workshop program, USAID and IUCN brought together and relied upon a Steering Committee of leading partners, including the Women’s Environment and Development Organization (WEDO), the REDD+ Social and Environmental Standards (SES) initiative, the UN-REDD Programme and the pro-poor and cobenefits REDD+ initiatives of IUCN.
Climate Change Gender Action Plan (Phase II) for the Republic of Mozambique
The Republic of Mozambique was a trailblazer on connecting issues of gender and climate change by pursuing a Gender, Environment and Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan in early 2010 - making Mozambique’s the first government in the world to create such a policy and program for implementation.
With the support of IUCN, the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh produced a national climate change gender action plan. The ccGAP defines the role that the MoEF will play in initiating and facilitating efforts internally, as well as with strategic partners at the national, regional and international levels. It seeks to mainstream gender in climate change advantage of opportunities that promote gender equality and facilitate transformational change as we build a climate action as outlined in the BCCSAP, the NAPA and other policy documents.
Framework for Conducting Gender Responsive Analysis
A methodology developed by the IUCN to help develop and implement a gender-responsive analysis for a wide range of partner institutions. Key questions are provided to uncover gender gaps and issues at local, insitutional and national levels, as well as gendered differences in the distribution of benefits, risks and opportunities.
Tanzania National Strategy on Gender and Climate Change
This National Strategy for Mainstreaming Gender in Climate Change in Tanzania is the result of a collaboration between the Vice President’s Office - Environment of the Government of Tanzania, Gender Office of IUCN, the IUCN - ESARO and its Tanzania Office; and other key national institutions in Tanzania.
Climate Change Gender Action Plan for the Government of Nepal
This ccGAP, developed by IUCN in collaboration with the Government of Nepal and diverse stakeholders, has been developed not as an end in itself, but rather as catalyst for further action to be taken through the inclusion of gender in national climate change processes, policy development, decision-making and project development and – implementation. It is therefore not a stand-alone document, but rather an integral and synergistic complement to existing and future policies in Nepal, both concerning climate change and strategic national planning going forward.

Climate Change Gender Action Plan for the Government of Liberia
This Climate Change Gender Action Plan (ccGAP) for Liberia was prepared based on the desk review of key reports, publications and websites, surveys and interviews, in-country meetings, stakeholder consultation and research, among others. The Kingdom of Jordan is an upper middle income and developing country. Highly urbanized, over 70 percent of Jordan’s population live in towns and cities, making the local population highly dependent on energy. Jordan furthermore also ranks amongst the ten most water-poor countries in the world, with dire consequences to agriculture, food security and sustainable livelihoods. Being both highly urbanized and extremely water scarce, the Kingdom also faces an additional challenge – waste reduction and management.
