Background paper that explores the evidence on women’s asset ownership and the factors associated with it. It discusses the relationship between women’s asset ownership and their well-being, including their decision-making power and intimate partner violence. It reviews laws and programmes that have been introduced to improve women’s asset ownership, the challenges that have emerged, and the possibilities for creating enabling environments for increased control and ownership of assets by rural women.
