About this event

Climate change threatens the safety, security, health and well-being of all people, communities and countries throughout the world. However, its impacts are not felt equally – nor are climate-related services and opportunities – as women are often left behind when all hands on-deck are needed to overcome gender inequality and the global climate crisis. Under the Paris Agreement and its implementation guidelines, Parties are called to revise and implement Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) that are gender-responsive and participatory. On Gender Day, this UNFCCC COP pavilion event organised in collaboration between the Green Climate Fund and the International Union for Conservation of Nature showcases new research on how countries have integrated gender within revised/updated NDCs and how countries at national and project levels are working to ensure a climate-resilient world that values, protects and promotes gender equality and women’s empowerment. Presenting views from Indigenous women leaders, the event underscores the importance of inclusive and participatory climate policymaking, planning and implementation to ensure the rights of all.

Event objective

This event is tailored to promote information, knowledge and promising practices by environment sector leaders on advancing gender-responsive climate policy, planning, and implementation. Participants will gain a better understanding of what a wholesale approach to gender mainstreaming entails, and how strategic partnership and leadership can guide.

Intended audience

Focused on key decision-making, from NDC revisions/updates to NDC implementation planning and the UNFCCC Gender Action Plan update, this event is geared toward environmental decision makers, funds, implementing organisations and Indigenous and civil society groups. Organisers can expect questions on how the GCF can provide access to finance to CSO particularly those working on gender issues.

Speakers include

  • Carolina Fuentes, Secretary to the Board and Head of Governance Affairs, GCF
  • Åsa Regnér, Deputy Executive Director, UN Women
  • Irfan Tariq, Director General Climate Change, Pakistan Ministry of Climate Change
  • Ana Rojas, Senior Gender and Climate Change Adviser, IUCN
  • Jennifer ‘Jing’ Corpuz, Global Policy and Advocacy Lead, Nia Tero
  • And a video compilation from IUCN’s Guatemala Office
